Ex Machina Italia is officially an implementing partner of the SMART-PLACEMENT-UNIMORE-IA (SPUIA) project, an innovative initiative launched by the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, funded by European funds from the Emilia Romagna Region (Reference Call: Placement services and career support to attract, enhance and retain talents – L.R. 2/2023) that uses artificial intelligence to solve the long-standing problem of misalignment between academic skills and job market demands.
All universities offer Placement services to their graduates in connection with the business world. These services are already digital, particularly the one used by many universities provided by the Almalaurea Consortium. However, companies often struggle to describe their needs in terms of profiles and skills, and especially to understand which degree courses to target in their search.
The integration of artificial intelligence at this precise moment, that is, during the publication of a job position posting, can resolve and speed up this process, making it more evident to the operator where to better direct the choice. The hope is that after this AI-assisted phase, the professional placement of university students will benefit from precise and personalized matching that connects academic profiles with job opportunities, always with the aid of AI.
In effect, this strengthens the AlmaLaurea platform, which already has a “treasure trove” of data in its existing databases, both regarding recent graduates’ CVs and the presence of numerous companies that use placement services. COSMO 42 is the technological platform that Ex Machina Italia will deploy specifically to elicit this potential from Almalaurea’s databases. This is the task for which this platform was created – to process voluminous documentary archives and extract value from them.
Obviously, the technology serves the ultimate goal of increasing the effectiveness of graduate placement and reducing costs for companies in their search for qualified personnel. It is expected that, thanks to the introduction of a dedicated language model (LLM), this will indirectly improve the planning of university educational offerings, with an enrichment and better definition of the information necessary and useful for making the “matching” between supply and demand work.
From this perspective, the project not only deals with university education but aims to integrate regional vocational training offerings into the model. Furthermore, the project includes actions to promote training opportunities in the field of additional skills (e.g., transversal and soft skills) for university students and graduates.
With these premises, the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia aims to increase the effectiveness of its ability to attract and retain graduating/graduated talents. Once tested by the Emilian university, this innovative approach could be extended to other universities in the region, with the more general objective of strengthening regional productive capacities, facilitating young people’s entry into the workforce, in implementation of regional law 2/2023 for the enhancement and retention of talents in Emilia-Romagna.
